Persian Carpet

Our Persian rugs are authentically handwoven, inspired by age-old traditions from Iran and the Middle East. From classic patterns from cities such as Tabriz, Nain and Isfahan to more modern interpretations, each rug tells a story through rich colours and detailed patterns.

Buying a Persian rug: origin, knot, and city

Persian rugs are named after the city or region where the pattern originated. That name says a lot about the design, color, and density. An original Persian rug is hand-knotted, usually with the asymmetric Persian knot. A higher knot density results in a finer, more precise design. In addition to pieces from Iran, you will find Persian designs here that were knotted elsewhere, such as a Bidjar from India. Every product page specifies origin and material. Together, they form the heart of our oriental rugs.

Tabriz, Nain, Isfahan, and Keshan

A Tabriz comes from northwestern Iran and often features a central medallion with rich floral vines. You can recognize a Nain by ivory and blue tones, with silk in the contours. The designation 6-la or 9-la refers to the number of threads in the warp: the lower the number, the finer the rug. An Isfahan is generally very finely knotted, sometimes on a silk foundation. A Keshan stands out for its deep red and navy blue colors around a medallion.

Kirman, Bidjar, Senneh, and Kashmar

Kirman rugs from the southeast display soft hues and lush floral motifs. A Bidjar is Kurdish and extremely densely knotted. It is not for nothing that it is called the iron rug of Persia. Senneh rugs are thin and fine, often featuring the Herati motif. A Kashmar from Khorasan has dense, almost picturesque fields full of flowers.

Where does a Persian rug fit?

A medallion rug demands a central spot, under a coffee table or dining table. An all-over pattern works well in a hallway or study. In a modern interior, a Persian piece adds depth between sleek furniture. Choose a size so that at least the front legs of the sofa are on it. Prefer muted colors? Then take a look at Ziegler.

Maintenance and advice in Maastricht

Vacuum in the direction of the pile and rotate the rug half a turn once a year. This distributes wear and discoloration from sunlight. Dab stains with cold water, without rubbing. Only at full size and in daylight will you see which character suits your room.

Draai het tapijt om. Bij handwerk ziet u elke knoop afzonderlijk op de achterkant, en het patroon is daar bijna even scherp als aan de voorkant. De franjes zijn het verlengde van de kettingdraden en dus niet aangenaaid. Kleine onregelmatigheden in maat of kleur zijn normaal. Een machinaal tapijt heeft een strak raster en vaak een kunststof of verlijmde rug.

Meet eerst de zithoek of eethoek, niet de hele kamer. Onder een zithoek kiest u een formaat waarop de voorpoten van bank en fauteuils rusten, vaak 240 x 170 of 300 x 200 cm. Onder een eettafel moet het tapijt rondom zo’n 70 cm uitsteken, zodat een stoel ook uitgeschoven nog op het tapijt staat. Kleinere Nain- en Senneh-formaten zijn mooi naast een bed of in de hal.

La staat voor het aantal draden waaruit de schering is gedraaid. Een 4-la is het fijnst, daarna volgen 6-la en 9-la. Een 6-la heeft daardoor meer knopen per vierkante meter en een fijnere tekening dan een 9-la. Beide zijn handgeknoopt en hebben vaak contouren van zijde, die het patroon licht laten glanzen.

Bij normaal gebruik is een professionele wasbeurt om de drie tot vijf jaar voldoende. In een drukke woonkamer of met huisdieren is dat eerder nodig. Een wasbeurt haalt zand en stof diep uit de pool, wat een stofzuiger niet bereikt. Gebruik thuis geen tapijtshampoo of stoomreiniger, want die kunnen kleuren laten uitlopen en de wol verzwakken.

Dat hangt af van herkomst, knoopdichtheid, materiaal en staat. Fijn geknoopte stukken van goede wol of zijde, met een gave pool en franjes, houden hun waarde het best. Machinaal geweven tapijten doen dat niet. Goed onderhoud is daarom de beste bescherming: regelmatig zuigen, af en toe draaien en tijdig professioneel laten wassen.
