Oriental furniture with a lived-in past

Chinese cabinets and sideboards

The Chinese furniture in our collection consists of antique cabinets and sideboards, often finished in red or black lacquer. In China, red is considered the color of good luck and was widely used for wedding cabinets. Characteristic features include the panels, metal fittings, and raised cabinet legs. A low Chinese sideboard works well as a TV stand or as a buffet in the dining room.

Almirah cabinets and chests from India

An Almirah is a tall Indian cabinet, traditionally used for clothing and household goods. These Indian furniture pieces often have multiple layers of paint that have worn away over the years. As a result, an older color or the bare wood shows through here and there. In addition to cabinets, you will find antique chests, Almirah nightstands, and wooden panels. They instantly add a warm, artisanal touch to a white or concrete space. Such Asian furniture pieces are not reproductions, but items that have been in use for decades.

Oriental furniture lends itself well to new functions. An Almirah can become a bookcase or china cabinet. An old chest serves as a coffee table or as storage at the foot of the bed.

An antique cabinet in a contemporary home

Solid wood reacts to humidity. Small seams or hairline cracks are part of antique furniture and tell a story of its age. Do not place a cabinet directly against a radiator or in full sunlight. Humidity between 40 and 60 percent is ideal. Dusting with a dry cloth is sufficient. A little furniture wax on untreated wood keeps it looking good, but never use silicone spray on lacquer or old paint.

Buddhas, curiosities, and more

Under other furniture, you will find pieces that are hard to categorize. Think of hardstone Buddhas, a statue of a warrior on horseback, antique medicine cabinets, and an old olive tree trunk from China. Such oriental furniture and objects are best seen in person. Come visit us in Maastricht, at Helmstraat 12. There, they are displayed among the rugs, so you can see firsthand how wood, lacquer, and wool go together.
