Oriental Rugs

Oriental Rugs connect ancient traditions with timeless beauty. From flat-woven Kilims to Persian masterpieces and refined Ziegler designs, each piece is hand-knotted by masters who have perfected this craft over generations. An Oriental Rug brings history and enduring beauty into your home.

Oriental carpet: craftsmanship from Iran, India, Pakistan, and Turkey

Origin and knotting

Every oriental carpet carries the characteristics of its region. In Iran, the asymmetrical Persian knot is usually used, which allows for fine, round motifs. In Turkey and the Caucasus, the symmetrical Turkish knot is common. The more knots per square meter, the sharper the pattern. Hereke natural silk carpets from Turkey and silk rugs from Kashmir are among the finest knotted works.

Five traditions in this collection

Persian carpets include city carpets such as Isfahan, Tabriz, and Bidjar. Ziegler carpets feature large, loose ornaments in muted vegetable tones. Kilims are flat-woven without a pile, with geometric motifs. Vintage carpets are old rugs that have been sheared, overdyed, or assembled as patchwork. Masterpieces include exceptional pieces, such as fine Kashkulis from the Qashqai tribes.

Authenticity and maintenance

Turn a rug over before you choose. With handcrafted items, the pattern on the back is just as sharp as on the front, with small irregularities. The fringes are the ends of the warp threads and are not sewn on afterwards. Vacuum in the direction of the pile and keep the fringes out of the vacuum nozzle. Moths seek dark, undisturbed places, so vacuum regularly under sofas and cabinets as well. Have an oriental rug professionally cleaned every few years. Small frays on the sides or loose fringes are best repaired quickly. This prevents damage from spreading further into the weave. An oriental carpet that is well cared for also gains luster and softness as it ages.

Oriental rugs with a history

Koreman has been working with oriental carpets since 1960 and knows the differences between regions, knots, and qualities. In our premises on Helmstraat in Maastricht, a large part of the collection is stored in stacks. We turn them over for you, one by one, so you can compare colors and sizes directly. If you already have an old rug at home that needs attention, our team also provides cleaning and repair services.
