A rug largely determines the style and atmosphere in a home and dresses up a space. If your decor is a bit outdated, a rug can breathe new life into the room. A rug is also attractive if you want to renew your flooring without investing in an entirely new floor, with all the associated burdens.
You are, of course, looking for that one rug that best suits the rest of your interior. Fortunately, there are so many unique rugs that there is always one for your living room, bedroom, or other space. On the other hand, a large selection makes the choice more difficult. Which rug do you choose? And based on what? It might look perfect in the store or webshop, but how do you know in advance that the rug will look just as good in your space as you expect? Below are some tips to keep in mind when purchasing a new rug.
Rug Size?
First, the dimensions of your rug are important. Which room will the rug be placed in? The rug doesn't have to fit perfectly: a large rug placed under various pieces of furniture makes the room optically larger; a small rug makes the room cozier. If you place the rug under the dining table, make sure that the rug extends at least 60 centimeters. In that case, you can still move the chairs without them leaving the rug. Especially when buying the rug from a webshop: always try out the size at home first by laying newspapers the size of the rug in the room. This will give you a good impression of the true size and help you better assess whether the size is suitable.
Rug Shape
The shape of the rug is related to its size. Are you going for a round, square, or rectangular rug? A round rug can work well in an (approximately) square room, as it breaks up the 'squareness' of the space. If the room has a different shape, a square/rectangular rug will often look better.
Color and Pattern of the Rug
The most important thing to consider regarding color and pattern are the walls. If one or more walls have a pattern, it's better to choose a plain rug. If all walls are plain, a patterned rug can be a nice contrast, drawing attention to itself. However, a plain rug in such a space is often also an excellent choice. Also important, of course: make sure the colors of the rug don't clash unattractively with other large elements in your interior, such as the sofa or chairs.
Layering Rugs
If you want more, you can choose to layer several rugs. This is particularly nice for a larger space where one rug isn't enough. When you layer the different rugs, you can connect various elements of the interior. Make sure the rugs complement each other.
Anti-slip
Some rugs have an anti-slip backing. This prevents the rug from sliding and keeps it neatly in place as you wish. If the rug does not have an anti-slip backing, you can always purchase an anti-slip underlay.
No-obligation viewing and advice
Even if you have measured everything and thoroughly considered the colors and designs, it can still be difficult to assess whether the hand-knotted rug you like will look good in the space you've chosen it for. If you want to be sure of the right choice, we recommend using our 'no-obligation viewing' service.
We also offer the service of coming to view your interior. With an impression of your interior, we can advise you even better when you come to select rugs that you would like to see in your home. This can include advice on color schemes, dimensions, patterns, and the type of rug. Read more about our service.
